  1. This is my first time posting here (in this reality, at least), and I’ve been reading comments and articles for a few days. I thought that I would introduce myself with the details that I remember.

Like many others, I came for the BerenSTEIN (which I am positive of, btw) but have stayed because so many other things apply to me as well. The Berenstein Bears is by far the one I have the most vivid memories about (I had so many of their books and was a strong reader well before I started school, and I pronounced them BerenSTEEN and was shocked, along with a lot of other people that it’s always been Berenstain). I also just learned today that apparently it’s Chick-fil-a, which concerns me mainly because I worked there for three years when I was in college and could have sworn that it was Chik-fil-a. I feel very shaky about this because I’m wondering how I could be remembering the name of my employer of three years wrong, but Chick-fil-a does seem kind of right to me? It’s very unsettling.

I’m also positive that American Thanksgiving (I’m from the US) has always been on the third Thursday of November. I even named a video game pet turkey “Third Thursday.” That one has really shaken me, as well.

Other MEs that aren’t *quite* as strong (but are still pretty solid) include Nelson Mandela, Eli Whitney being black, Charles Schultz (I also remember him dying, along with Peanuts memorial stuff on sale for weeks and a very sad feeling that we wouldn’t get anymore Peanuts strips on Sunday mornings), in THE neighborhood, New Zealand vs. Australia, VIII’s ridiculous turkey leg, Jiffy peanut butter, and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, and the Challenger disaster, which happened when I was in kindergarten where I watched it happen live – it could not have been later than 1985, for me.

I’m a big science (non) fiction fan, and highly empathic. Not religious, but I must keep a clean space and meditate or I fall down a very dark hole. I love science and am open to a lot of things being true that we don’t yet understand.

One thing in my initial research that I haven’t heard anybody mention is the Space Shuttle Columbia and the possibility of it not happening in a previous reality. I was researching the Challenger disaster, which has always been something I’ve felt connected to for some reason (maybe because it was the first Big Thing that happened in real time and tiny little four-year-old me realized that she was seeing history happen for the first time in her life), but when I realized that I had the date wrong, I started researching, and… guess what I found. Another space shuttle disaster supposedly happened when I was 22 years old. I felt *so* connected to Challenger and yet another shuttle exploded, resulting in the deaths of the exact same number of crew members, and … I had never heard of it happening. How is that possible? I suppose I could have missed the news one day, but that doesn’t seem like the type of thing that would just never be mentioned again. I honestly did not know about the Space Shuttle Columbia until just a few days ago. Has this type of thing happened to anybody else or should we just chalk it up to being a clueless 22 year old?

Anyway, hi. I’m glad that there’s a community like this.

    1. We must be from the same space… challenger 1985. Columbia I had never heard of until I read it here a couple months ago. I was really shocked. In my “timeline” it was chic-fil-a though. I too remember Charles Schulz dying like years ago and being sad about no more peanutz in the Sunday paper. Are you saying he’s still alive!!??!! I have to go look.

I have many of the exact same as you do.

      1. Well, that *was* what I was saying about Charles Schultz, but now Wikipedia is telling me that he died in February 2000. (My memory is closer to 1989-ish.) I swear, I was just talking with a friend about how weird it was that he’s still alive when we both thought he was dead. Except that he *is* dead.

        Welp.

        1. It’s cool…these things happen. I too looked it up and knew 2000 didn’t look right but I can’t say specifically when I think he did die… I can say that I have a niece born Nov 21 and every 6/7 years her birthday would fall on thanksgiving but this is impossible now.. so I get where your coming from.. I’m 41 by the way.

    2. Hi Sarah – I posted on here somewhere in the multitude of comments, the exact same “non-memory” about the Columbia disaster, and I’m 40.

I have extremely vivid, strong memories about the Challenger – I know right where I was, and the reaction of my 5th grade teacher, and later in the day, my parents, is burned in my brain – but *nothing* zero, zilch, zip for the Columbia where I would have been 27.

It makes no sense, and you are definitely not alone on this one.

    3. Really glad to hear I’m not the only one who was shocked about Columbia. This is easing my mind quite a bit. That one really threw me.

      1. I remember when the Columbia disaster happened in my reality, and I remember at the time thinking it was odd that the media was not making that big of deal about. I mean it was a huge story, but nowhere near the story that the Challenger was. I remember talking to people at the time who didn’t watch the news and were clueless about it until I showed them news articles. It just wasn’t all over the place like the Challenger news was. So I can see how people may have missed the story. Looking back, it may have had to do with the times, the disaster happened almost a year and a half after 9/11, America was going to war, and the media may have tried to down play the tragedy to keep American morale high.

  2. Back to the “Deja-vu” thing, I have heard something like this before but I have added a bit of the mandela effect into it. Well we all know what the Mandela Effect is, certain, little things changing because we jumped from a parallel universe or reality changed. So since these things that we have noticed are different, like berenstein and berenstain, everything must be just a tiny but different. But in very rare occasions, something we do or say or just a situation happens exactly like it did in the alternate reality or universe, and thats why we feel like we have done it before, because we have. And thats why it happens so rarely, because it is a very slim chance for a situation to be precisely the same as the other from the alternate universe. I hope you get what I’m saying…

  3. I saw this comment on YOutube, which I find interesting:

“an episode of ” Chuck” ( good show by the way !) and in season 2 episode 12, which aired 2-2-2009, a character was giving a speech and mentions Nelson Mandela and says:

    “” God rest his soul”

I know it’s T.V but still, why would they say something like that ? It seems like the writers thought Nelson Mandela had passed away”

  4. For Vivienne;
My specific memory of noticing Mc items/Mac logos is from ausust 1982. We were on vacation in San Diego and going to a padres game. Dad wanted to get us stuffed at MacDonald’s to avoid overpriced stadium fare. When I noticed in 2006, at that very moment in the van in Spokane, I tried but could not for the life of me remember a time when I looked at the signs or logos. Like, really read the signs. I really felt like it was MacDonald’s for me until that moment.

    For everyone else…
I have, like apparently everyone who has come across this phenomena for the first time, not been able to think about anything else. Sooo many shared memories, sooo many not. Can’t wrap my head around the implications. Always subscribed to quantam theory, Einstein/Rosen, string theory multiverse etc. I consider myself bright, emotionally and mentally stable happy all that jazz BUT… The other night I’m up reading posts here and a guy is talking about changes in the opening sequence of magnum p.I. a black door instead of red (or vice versa) and a curvy camaro instead of boxy ferrari and I FREAK. I immediately Google magnum p.I. and as I’m doing so, I can’t describe how I feel. What I think. Anxiety and fear, mostly, but unlike anything I can compare as to the intensity of those emotions. I’m 44 years old and have lived a crazy rollercoaster ride already. I think I can handle anything but if magnum doesn’t have a Ferrari I’m going to take f’n hostages naked and on fire. Whew. Magnum has a Ferrari. Before I even go back to look at his post I think oh yeah.he said in the opening sequence, not “now magnum has a camaro not a Ferrari”. Again, I can’t describe how freaked out I was. I have never had that sensation. I have faced death and I was afraid. The overwhelming fear of your own death in the moment you think you are about to die. This sensation was WAY more intense, though not exactly just fear.
My happy regular normal self is starting to think ” OK. All these intertwined timelines are real. We’re sliding in between them all the time and maybe always have been, in the infinite possibilities of this multiverse infinite numbers of timelines are yours and unique to you and some all none are correct or incorrect to everyone else and shouldn’t I say “oh well so the fk what!” And go about my business. Or eat some high velocity buckshot and see if I wake up in MacDonald’s.

    1. Hey Gabe,
I just wanted to say, I had this same feeling when I stumbled across the Tienamen Square video accidentally. I have been through some seriously rough times as well, so I’m pretty familiar with how TRUE FEAR or dread feel. When I first watched that video, I felt a certain amount of fear, but what really hit me was my inability to reconcile this video with my existing memories. I immediately began to sweat, and I felt like I was getting motion sickness.
Anyway, you’re not alone and I haven’t run across any other anomalies that have affected me that strongly. I wish you the best, and I hope you dont either!

    1. Hmm… interesting, and pretty to look at, but not terribly credible, at this point. The only two news sources (and I use that term loosely) reporting it, so far, are express.co.uk and metro.co.uk. They’re not exactly the most respected news sources.

      1. Fiona,

There are multiple reports of this same story on other “respectable” news sources. Most are discounting it as a Fata Morgana (superior mirage), but if you look at other Fata Morganas, this one in China doesn’t share any of the same attributes.

        Regards,
        Steve M.

        1. The problem I have with the whole Fata Morgana theory is that NOBODY can show what these floating cities are mirages of. They look nothing like a modern day city. SO what are they images of??? They have to be reflection of something known, but nobody can say what THAT is. And they are not exactly on the ground like a mirage should be, not high up n the clouds. So we have a VERY rare phenomena happen 3x in a week. I don’t know what’s going on, but the official explanations don’t cut it with me. Mike H.

          1. Mike H., I agree. I’ve been looking at some of the photos that show the “illusion” more clearly and some are very odd. This may need to become an article, if I have time in the next day or so.

          2. I agree that these images or supposed mirages are completely fascinating. Coupled with the fact that these images are being seen on more than one occasion coinciding with the recent increased activity at CERN. They went public last week with their attempts to prove their are parallel universes. I also agree that the explanations that are being given are full of holes. It is getting mainstream news coverage, as I saw an article on CNN website. However all the mainstream coverage I’ve seen completely discredits the images as anything other than a hoax. Pretty soon I would imagine this will disappear from the mainstream news, but it will be interesting to see if the sightings continue. Truly creepy feeling I get when looking at those images.

            1. Thanks, Skepticalbeliever. And thanks, Fiona for taking this topic seriously.

              Skepticalbeliever,
I am also not comfortable with the “official” explanation of these floating cities. The explanations discredit them in whole as a “mirage” or a hoax, but there is no explanation about why they are a hoax. All I can find is that they say the video of the one in China is proven to be a hoax, but then there is no further evidence to back up that assertion. Very fishy. Also, the mirage explanation doesn’t suffice either. Any other description or picture of a fata morgana doesn’t look anything like these floating cities. They are always low to the ground and very ethereal and shimmering, almost shifting, which would make sense given the known science behind a true fata morgana. However, these floating cities have none of those attributes. They are high in the sky, fully formed, non-shifting, and more opaque and solid than ethereal.

              Mike H.,
I agree, no one can show the physical structures that these supposed fata morganas are reflecting. The explanation of a fata morgana is that it’s a mirage, or reflection, of some physical thing (boat, islands, mountains, etc), low to the horizon, and the image is inverted (upside down) and changes rapidly. NONE of the floating cities take on these attributes. They are not inverted, low to the horizon, and they aren’t rapidly changing shapes.

              Thank you,
              Steve M.

    2. This is truly strange why this “weather phenomenon” is occuring NOW. If this really is connected to nature/weather then why has nobody got any records/pics of this occurring in the past? Not even in the past 100 years have I come across any info about this phenomenon. Seems like it just “materialized” in the last 5 years or so.

Now that Macdonalds was mentioned, McDonald’s does look off but I’m not sure.

Have you seen this video on the arguwment that reality is a computer simulation? Apperantly string theory equations were broken down into a computer binary code.

Are we all part of a computer system of simulated parallel universes on advanced computers? Could this explain the Mandela effect?

  6. Ok, so all of this past weekend, I had a severe headache. The week leading up to it, I had a severe pain deep in my calf. Makes me wonder if I had a DVT that broke loose and traveled to my brain. If that’s the case, it makes me wonder how many of my alternate selves died over the weekend. Anyway, ever since the headache passed, I’ve had tinnitus off and on. Also everything seems more vivid, but my mood has been so much better too. Almost seems like my mind has made the final transition to this reality. I still remember the differences(ie A/THE, Berenstein, etc), but they don’t taste as bad as they used to so to speak.

If they ever kick that thing to full speed I’ll be dead – the pain was that bad – and I had just taken a hydrocodone. 🙂

  7. Forgive me if this has been covered. I was thinking yesterday about the E and the A as it regards to the Bears. Then, I thought about Interview With A Vampire. Now, it’s The vampire. I’m not nearly as good at logic and mathematics as some others here, but Interview with E Vampire obviously makes no sense. I’m wondering aloud if there’s a pattern between the E and the A. One swap for another? If it works for you, run with it. Otherwise, it’s nothing. The only reason I post is because I don’t give these minute details much consideration. Recently, I get these thoughts that seem to form outside of my consciousness or contrary to what I’m “thinking” at the time. This one seems overly simplistic, but it hit me pretty hard…like it’s a clue. Warm regards, Jason

    2. Interesting indeed and worthy of more analysis. “A” does seem to pop up and disappear a bit. It works for Mc/Mac, is/Was (gump), A/the (vamp), in/and (city), Berenstein of course, I’m just going from memory. I know there’s more. Perhaps it’s a map to something. It does often seem to revolve around vowels (fruit/froot). I wonder if we put all of these anomalies together what anagrams we could make, or sentences we could come up with. Perhaps we are dealing with a cipher. There would be a key to unlocking it if so.

It is my understanding that within the English language the substitute of vowels is/was permissible and possibly intended. It is a form of malleability encouraging alterations in perception with just a change/substitute of or complete dropping of a vowel.

The English language in itself is dynamic. So, in essence, if we use words to frame our ideas, help form our memories, and keep records it is quite possible for our perceptions to assimilate and/or accommodate with the current status quo. It is the reason why some things do not quite translate well in other languages/culture because there is a different thought process.

Think about how the Jewish write the Kabbalah. If one letter is off the entire thing must be disposed of. The numbers do not add up (gematria) telling them something has been changed. There are no vowels.

( In August 2015, I noted the following:
ProctEr & Gamble- words proctor and procter mean something entirely different. Proctor- look over, supervise, monitor. Procter – to make definite, distinct, clear.
As of today, 10/26/2015, when searching for the word procter I could not find this as actually being a word although I found it 2 months ago. However, Procter is recognized as a name for boys which seems to hold the same meaning as “proctor”. The “e” perhaps, initially, was to expose and make things clear on what we are seeing going on. Have to be quick on the draw or the info will disappear…?)

Procter /proc-ter/ [2 sylls.] as a boys’ name is of Latin origin, and the meaning of Procter is “steward, official”.

Also, the NY Times recently printed an article about what might happen if someone were to go back in time and kill baby Hitler. Also, I believe a television show was made with this theme, an episode. This is third hand as I didn’t read the article or see the show. I only know it was being discussed. What I find extremely interesting is that the concept was discussed in a NYT article. I’m not going to hide from my truth. I’m starting to read news articles and watch programming from a completely different perspective. I believe clues are embedded throughout all media publications, despite the prevalence of misinformation and disinformation. At any rate, I found your comments on vowels and assimilation extremely thought provoking. Warm regards, Jason

I can’t be 100% sure but the ‘Steal Your Face Pin’ that my friend purchased last year and is pictured in the RED/BLUE thread, was BLUE-RED/BLUE-RED with a WHITE lightning bolt in the middle pictured on the site. Its what he says he bought. He took out his pin and when he first put it down I could swear it was BLUE-BLUE/RED-RED. By the time I took the picture it changed and i just thought with all the RED/BLUE my eyes were playing tricks on me. It was RED-BLUE/RED-BLUE with a GOLD lightning bolt. It was still different, so I didn’t give it much thought.

Where something catastrophic did happen. Those pictures , really give me a cold feeling, a sense of dread. I actually get kind of uneasy looking at them. They look like “dead” cities to me. Maybe THATS how we all ended up here together. Mike H.

I keep arranging, and re-arranging words, letters, colors, people, geography ect. Trying to find meaningful patterns. Believe me though, I for one, am trying.

I just can’t help it ,I keep going back to dilemna. It’s very meaning can apply directly to the ME , do you pick this path, or that path. Do you pick this “timeline’, or that “timeline”, choices ,if unsure which direction to go , present a dilemna. This one is a very hard one for people to just “explain” away.

Daniels example of procter/proctor is another one—-person (entity—CHANI??), that watches or looks over us. Or maybe it/they watch over this reality?? Just things I think about. Mike H.

I see my reply somehow ended up in the middle of the McDonald’s conversation, and I can’t find the original comment I was replying to. I can’t recall who posted it, but it was about Snow White, another changed noticed in the mirror mirror part. The queen now says “who’s the fairest one of all?” The original poster recalled “who’s the fairest of them all?” I am in agreement that it was the latter. So in my opinion, at least, the whole magic/mirror quote is now different.

And, I’m hoping the next WordPress update addresses some of these commenting issues, as well.

  9. Hi all, I was just scrolling through FB and I see that Marty Ingallls died. He was an actor, costliest appearances on shows in the 60s and on game shows. He was married to Shirley Jones. Is it a false memory or didn’t he already die? Not sure when. Not as convinced he died as I am that Richard Chamberlain died so I thought I’d put it out there for anyone to out their 2 cents in. Thanks.

      1. Mike H., we agree again. In the reality I was in at least a decade ago, I was sure that Chamberlain had died, and I thought it was due to AIDS. At the time, that took many people by surprise.

When I found out he hadn’t died, I thought maybe I’d mixed him up with his brother, James Franciscus.

Well, Franciscus did die in 1991, but it was of emphysema and I find absolutely no reference to him being Chamberlain’s brother.

        Very odd.

          1. I recall Arctica and Antartica as the two polar landmasses. I’m looking at all the alternatives now — “the Artic” (region related to climate and geography) and the Arctic Ocean, and the now-missing landmass on the maps (I added it to the map on the related t-shirt) — and the whole thing seems very odd.

The only thing that makes sense (aside from chalking it up to Mandela Effect) is if the maps were changed, preemptively, in anticipation of Arctica melting and no solid land mass being above the water.

And, just to make things more confusing for mapmakers, Wikipedia says this on their Arctic Circle page: “The position of the Arctic Circle is not fixed. It directly depends on the Earth’s axial tilt, which fluctuates within a margin of 2° over a 40,000-year period, due to tidal forces resulting from the orbit of the Moon. The Arctic Circle is currently drifting northwards at a speed of about 15 m (49 ft) per year (see also Circle of latitude).”

Okay, that’s not a huge geographic shift, but it does make me wonder if this isn’t Mandela Effect, but an effort to cope with melting ice caps… without ruffling any feathers.

  11. Hello everyone,
When I read the section regarding video games, it got me to thinking about whether I knew of any ME’s in video games. I immediately jumped to what is, arguably, the most famous “Urban Legend” in video games.
A quick disclaimer. The history of this legend is FILLED with Conspiracy Theory! But, I believe, the core of the story could be ME related.

Does anyone remember a video game called POLYBIUS?

If you are curious, here are the facts. Some time in the 1990’s, a rumor started circulating that a video game had been involved in a government program. Jump to today and the boiled down version is that some people have memories of a video game called POLYBIUS existing in an arcade in Oregon in 1981. So far, no physical evidence has come out to prove this arcade cabinet ever existed.
So, if you ignore the conspiracy speculation, all thats left are peoples memories of the game. I, personally, have a memory of this game, but I didn’t grow up in Oregon.
    Thanks for reading this everyone!

    1. Hi DbD! I grew up in the early videogame era and remember scares about flashing screens causing epilepsy and the microcomputer scene crossing over with the end of the psychedelic era. Those early games were really trippy. Because of that, Polybius is one of my favourite creepy Internet memes (what the 4chan and reddit kids now call ‘creepypasta’, but it was around long before then). It’s the perfect name, too. But I’ve never met anyone until now who personally remembers it. Can you talk about what you remember?

There are of course several Polybius games now that have been created because of the myth, like Slenderman, which complicates things.

      1. Hey Nate,
I don’t mind talking about it, but my memories aren’t of anything extraordinary. (No sickness or MIB! Ha Ha!)
I grew up in a pretty meager home, so I didn’t get an allowance. Whenever I made any money through neighborhood jobs I was pretty conscious of how I spent it. I was also unfortunate enough to have moved several times between the years of 1980 and 1983, so I had attended different schools for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Needless to say, I didn’t have a group of friends to hang out with. Do you remember the term “Latch Key Kids” ?
Sometime between 1981 and 1982 I had moved close enough to a local arcade, “Pinball Plus”, to be able to skateboard there. I could go there alone and not feel like a weirdo, so it became a hang out for me whether I had money or not.
The day POLYBIUS showed up, I remember being excited to try a new game and possibly get my name up on the high score screen, but the machine was off. I decided to set aside $1 and play it the next day. Well, it was a week before I found the macine turned on (I think this is the reason I even remember this, because that dollar was BURNING a hole in my pocket ALL WEEK!) I watched the screen to see the high score screen, but it never changed. I thought maybe the high scores would show after I played, so I put in a token and started.
The graphics were VERY MUCH like the Youtube videos, except for the background. The background looked like a circular ringed shooting target but each ring was a different color, so like a rainbow target. The colors were not vibrant, so the white graphics were difficult to see through the background. A couple of seconds passed before I was able to figure out what was going on and how I was affecting the game. When I moved the joystick (I’m not 100% sure it was a joystick?) the environment rotated rather than the ship , which was not at the bottom of the screen, but on the right. The whole set up was a bit disorienting so it took me a couple of seconds to figure all this out. I remember making a quick comparison to ASTEROIDS because of the wire frame graphics, and being a ship shooting STUFF. I was really annoyed about how difficult it was to see the gameplay, and the fact that I couldn’t move my ship in closer to the mass of objects in the center of the screen and BLAST AWAY at them. I thought, OK kind of a sideways SPACE INVADERS gameplay. As the objects moved away from the center, they would start moving in directions other than directly away the center. Since I was causing the environment to rotate, the objects would move QUITE unusually! Sometimes they looked like they were staying still, while other times they might look like they were ZOOMING wildly around the screen. The total time I spent playing it was probably around 3 minutes. After I had exhausted my lives, I waited to see the high score screen, but there wasn’t one.
The whole thing ended up being a disappointment to me because the wait had built up my hopes of getting my name on the high score screen, but there wasn’t one! I didn’t even spend the other three tokens on it.
The machine remained in the arcade until I moved away, but after about 2 weeks I never saw it turned on again. I remember seeing the blank screen had the image of the title burned into it even though it was turned off.
Nothing strange ever occurred to me after playing it. I did have 2 nightmares that the arcade was in, but I don’t think that was because of POLYBIUS.

        1. Hi DbD and thanks for that very detailed memory!

What you’re describing sounds very similar to the 1981 Atari game Tempest (wireframe, first person 3d, and rotating the screen / player point of view). And in fact ‘an unreleased Tempest prototype’ is the leading non-spooky interpretation of ‘Polybius’ memories according to the fan sites I’ve read. Whether it actually *was* related to Tempest is another issue (I don’t know that any internal Atari documentation has ever confirmed a prerelease under that name), but certainly that design was very distinctive and unusual for the era. Even today. Gyruss in the late 80s (sprite not wireframe) is the only one that’s close.

Polybius would not have been an unusual name for a wireframe game heavily featuring ‘polygons’ (then a very cutting edge feature) – game designers were in love with odd and pretentious names with an academic ring to them. And the innovative 3d perspective could well have caused motion sickness in some players; it’s a big problem in today’s VR gaming rigs like Oculus Rift.

In NZ in the 80s we had a lot of oddball arcade variants, but I’ve identified most of them in game databases so I know they’re not MEs. For instance we had a hacked Donkey Kong called ‘Monkey Kong’, a hacked Zaxxon called ‘Jackson’, several Space Invaders tweaks including ‘The Space Invaders Part II’ and ‘Jatre Specter’.. and a Pac-Man with a weird cabinet showing a ghost with a vacuum cleaner. So I guess I’m very used to not living in the US pop culture core, and having to deal with anomalies on daily basis. But most discrepancies I know aren’t MEs. It’s the ones that remain that intrigue mw.

          1. Hey Nate,
Always nice to chat with another gamer! I’ve read the speculations regarding the possibilities of “Polybius” being the “Tempest” prototype. It’s a pretty sound theory, I can see why its as popular as it is. Occam’s razor. I have a problem with the explanation, ONLY because of my memories. A little backstory is needed to clarify.
Since the Urban Legend broke, people have been searching for a machine as proof, but one has NEVER been found. Afew years ago a person claimed to possess a copy of just the game. He claimed to have tracked down the developer and gotten a copy of the original game. Without any proof or evidence, this claim has been, for the most part, dismissed as fake.
This is where my memories come in. I also had a memory regarding who the developer was. I had stared at the title screen, waiting to see the high scores. The title screen was set up just like every other arcade game. The title of the game, boldly, in the center of the screen, and in smaller font under it, the developer and copyright. I believe, based only on my memories, this version of the game is real.
You mentioned wire frame, 3D, FPS (First Person Shooter), you can’t leave out “Star Wars”! Flying an X-Wing was a dream come true as a kid!
Just for info sake, my wife and I have been following the chatter regarding all the VR headsets coming out. She is also a gamer and 1 of the 10% who get motion sickness currently from FPS’s. So far, Oculus and Sony have both said the current gen headsets actually REDUCES the percentage of people who would get motion sick.
I love the “knock off” or “counterfeit” video games. Some can be absolutely RIDICULOUS! I’ve even heard rumors of hacked cabinets that made the games X-rated (As X-rated as sprites can be, anyway!) I’m not sure if you are aware of it, there is actually a, now debunked, Urban Legend that stated “Donkey Kong” was actually supposed to be called ” Monkey Kong”, but was misinterpreted into english. Maybe that old NZ hackjob cabinet is the origin of that old legend?

            Like

            1. Hi DbD. My apologies, I misremembered – our Donkey Kong knockoff wasn’t Monkey Kong after all, it was ‘Crazy Kong’. And apparently that was not only a legitimate licence, but a complete reengineering on different hardware! Yes, I’ve heard the debunked ‘Monkey Kong’ rumour and got my memory mixed up with that.

              http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=7430
              https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Kong

The ‘Jackson’ ROM hack of Zaxxon is well known too and turns up here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBPMNkJaqMA

On first-person 3D wireframe games, you’re right, there were several others at the time: Star Wars and Battlezone were big. Fast real-time 3D was a sort of ‘holy grail’ for everyone right up until Wolfenstein 3D came out in 1992, and vector graphics was like the 1981 equivalent of 3D accelerator cards in 2001; a slow CPU could draw and erase lines so much faster than on a raster.

I think I misread what you wrote – in Tempest, the whole screen didn’t rotate, did it? Just the ship (which was what Gyruss later did). And Tempest had full colour vector-graphics hardware, which was VERY rare. But the Polybius machine you’re describing sounds like it used white vector graphics (much more easily available to anyone who wasn’t Atari in 1981), but with coloured backgrounds or overlays?

I remember several Space Invaders machines which were white phosphor but with coloured plastic/cellophane overlays above the screen, so that each row of invaders was a different colour. Of course you could tell the trick because your missiles would change colour too as they went up the screen. Many cabinets also used a mirror (with the screen reversed and down in the guts of the cabinet facing up), with a backdrop behind the mirror so the screen projected onto a painted backdrop. I guess Polybius did that?

No high score table would suggest it was a very small game company or a prototype; phosphor burn suggests there was maybe only one machine that moved around various places? And maybe it was often switched off because it caused motion sickness, or there was something about it that players just didn’t like?

It’s pretty exciting to have an actual memory of this game! Like having family holiday snaps of Bigfoot.

              Cheers, Nate

              1. Hey Nate,
If my writing gives the impression that “Tempest” had a rotating environment, I’m sorry. The “Polybius” environment rotated. Also, I didn’t go into detail before but, I do remember thinking that the rainbow target was some sort of overlay and not part of the graphics.
I cant help but chuckle whenever hacked cabinets are mentioned. The names, the subtle changes, it’s all kind of funny to me!
Thanks for all the info you dug up! And also the info on the “Polybius” documentary. Although I dont mind sharing my memory here, I REALLY don’t want to look like”Crazy Cat Lady” in a film!

  12. Fiona, Whenever I patiently pay attention to various speculations,I usually get the drift and that prompts me to come out with the bone of contention. What I have perceived is that the ME followers are taking ME as a cue to substitute metaphysics with quantum physics, because they are uneasy with the concept of various planes of existence that metaphysics elucidates. As we know most of the universe consists of physics, particles and energy waves and we can safely assume that hydrogen and helium are included in physics rather than elemantary chemistry. My view is that since life is made up of complex chemistry and biology,a thing that we so far know exists only on comparatively miniscule earth, there is something beyond quantum physics and metaphysics(metaphysics is any way a stop gap arrangement of theologists),Ilya Progigine found imprints of teleology, evolving molecules that were inconsistent with the theory of evolution. Is it that a teleology might be moving things,a teleology that is not connected with any theology, and the anthropic principle and the whole physics of universe, simply a tool of that teleology ?.I hope I have not been dense.

I took my daughter to see it when it came out in theaters. She wanted to see it again, so we re watched it last night. This morning my daughter tells me that the movie came out in 2005…when she was 3 years old! She was surprised I would take her to a movie like that when she was 3. I would never! And how in the world would she remember a movie so well that we saw when she was 3? That’s 10 years ago. She even remembered some dialogue.
In my memory she was 7 or 8 when we saw it, and I was concerned it might be too scary for her.
I didn’t start taking her to movies in theaters until she was about 5. We both remember seeing it in the theater in our current city. When she was 3 we lived in a different city altogether (we moved when she was 6). There’s no way it came out in 2005.
Sorry for all the comments. I hope you don’t mind Fiona.

    1. My alternate memory of The Corpse Bride prompted me to do some research on Tim Burton films.

He did a series of short films called….”The World of Stainboy.” Freaking STAINboy! I’ve never heard of these but will be watching them ASAP.

The description on IMBD simply says: “Stainboy visits his troubled past”

The viewer ratings are mixed, but most agree the series is very weird. Here’s part of one review on IMBD:
“The film is quite strange and with a run-time of less than 8 minutes, it’s hard to really develop any kind of plot line. This, of course, is quite needed because we as the average viewer may not understand the concept of what a “stainboy” actually is. Once the film is over, we question everything we had seen before.”

I’m a big Tim Burton fan (also love me some Johnny Depp hehe) so I’m fairly familiar with his work. I’m looking forward to watching this series.

PS- last night I posted that I could see the man in the moon (for the first time in the months I’ve been watching for it). Did that comment disappear?

      1. FJ, the Stain reference is definitely creepy. That may be enough to warrant a Stain-related article.

The man in the moon comment seemed like a personal muse/observation, not referencing the Mandela Effect. It didn’t read very differently than, say, if I’d posted that last night’s sunset was unusually lovely. I’m sorry if you were relating it to a longer-term, reality-related issue. With the volume of comments I’m sorting through, now, I need to see a clear connection to the Mandela Effect.

I need to create a sky-related article, and — when I do — I hope you’ll repost your observations, there. (I’ll try to get to that article either today or tomorrow. Today, an ISP tech is checking our hardware, late in the day, as our connection keeps dropping.)

Not sure who is more “connected” Tim Burton, or his favorite actor (and one of mine), Johnny Depp. There is something beyond the Hollywood actor/director thing with these two. Its going to sound really strange to some on here, but I have always gotten the feeling these two “know something”, like “THE” secret. Like they are on another level. I am hoping someone understands this, or what I am trying to say. (Fiona? Daniel?, anyone?). Mike H.

        1. I understand, Mike H. Tim Burton has always been an outlier, and I absolutely adore his aesthetic visions. I think he met Johnny Depp and found a kindred spirit… someone clearly not from this reality. They’re equally odd and determined to live within their respective realities, and thus have a lot in common.

Do they know something? I haven’t a clue, but they’re definitely on their own planes/levels.

I’m a bit on the fence about Helena Bonham Carter, whether she’s an actual outlier or someone deeply affected by them.

It might be interesting to make a list of people with similar lifestyles/mindsets and see what they have in common, if anything. (My research always returns to the concept of patterns… things that connect the dots and lead to something interesting.)

  22. I remember Nelson Mandela being released from prison sometime in the 1990’s and then becoming president of South Africa. I also clearly remember his death in 2013 and his funeral. I have no recollection of him having passed away in prison.
I was born in 1966 and am an avid “news-junky” and a writer. It should be noted that I can recall details of my 1st birthday as well as many childhood details and events, so my memory works very well.
There are MANY other inconsistencies I’m experiencing as of December 2012.
I will continue reading and referencing this site.
Thank you for your work and your efforts here.

    1. I seem to have a double memory of mandela. I remember him being in prison, because there was a lot of controversy over his crimes that he actually admitted to, so when there were protests about him being in prison, i was sure he went on hunger strike, to protest that it was “white” south africans did it to stop his politics. I had a friend who lived in south africa so i was aware of what was happening, then flash forward and he was president, then he died in 2013, but the more i try to recall the 2013 death, the more i remember the questions about it that was discussed, how he wasnt seen and that he had died weeks earlier in hospital, but the more i thought about the 2013 death the less real it became, and i felt that he did die in 1980’s due to hunger strike complications it made his system weaker. and so he died. So i have two memories, one is getting weaker them more i think about it, the other is getting stronger.

Thats my memory of mandela, i was born in 1973 my memory isnt the best it used to be very good but things have been fading i can remember facts and stories, but personal history while i remember a lot its more memory of memories as if i have been told this is my past Nothing too distinct. If i read a story 5 years ago i remember i read it and i can find it.. i remember the broadest outlines, then i can go specific..

  23. This website and subsequently this topic continue to amaze me daily. It leads me to explore other areas and theories as I research ME and other related phenomena. Recently as a result of ME research, I discovered the CHANI Project. I have not seen it mentioned on this site previously, but I very easily could’ve missed it. I find the intellect on this site to be extraordinary for such a small (relatively) collection of people. So I would like to hear what others on this site think about the CHANI Project….do you think it was real or a hoax? It certainly has a great deal to do with jumping or merging timelines.
Also another fascinating aspect of this story is the purposeful disclosure of certain information on internet forums to gauge the response of the public. Makes you wonder how often this really happens.

I agree with you on the CHANI project, I am pretty familiar with it. Fascinating , is an understatement. If the story is to be believed , I think someone beat CERN to the punch in making contact. It’s a totally “mesmerizing” story. Mike H.

      1. FYI, I’m looking into the CHANI project and may create an article about it so these conversations are in one location. I’m still trying to define the connections between CHANI and Mandela Effect, so this doesn’t wander off-topic or become a repetition of topics best discussed at the CHANI site.

    2. Hi SkepticalBeliever. I’m sorry but on reading the original Nexus Magazine CHANI story of 2001, my reaction is that it’s unquestionably a hoax. Or rather, it’s a nice science fiction noir pulp story, but it bears no resemblance to reality. It’s the sort of trivial ‘creepypasta’ fiction that chat sites like AboveTopSecret, 4chan and reddit are full of.

The big giveaway to me is that, set in 2006, it refers to ‘Echelon’ as a sort of huge organisation. This is typical of Internet conspiracy speculation of the last decade, before Edward Snowden’s revelations, but it’s not how any actual intelligence agents would talk. Echelon was perfectly real! But it was part of a system for monitoring phone and satellite communication traffic, not Internet forums, and it was just one code name among many. If you read Snowden’s files you’ll see how the NSA really talk, and it’s very bland, technical, not this kind of gumshoe-sitting-in-my-office hardboiled noir writing.

It’s a nice little X-Files story. But it doesn’t read as remotely real to me. Sorry. And remember, the Internet is filled with bored teenagers who just love to write stuff like this and get giggles from pranking everyone.

      Regards, Nate

  24. I had a “what if” moment and, thought Id share. What if we are looking at the concept of time entirely wrong. What if, and this is not an entirely new idea except maybe in application to ME, but what if time really is like a vast, endless wide and lazy river. Events are then like stones, or pebbles tossed into points. Small events are like grains of sand thrown in while large ones are like boulders.

And so, what if, events and actions dont only affect the future, but can also affect the past, particularly in the case of large events, which could ripple backward in this slow moving river, changing the dynamic of the backstream. All the particles are still there, they just get adjusted a bit to accomodate the large future event.

Perhaps also, this would explain how a few seers seem to have genuinely seen future events and also why people get premonitions.

    Ot not. But what if.

    Like

    1. That’s really interesting, especially with the wave/particle of light tests that show that making an observation in the present can actually make a change to its state in the past. It could be possible to change the past without making any changes to the present or future. This could even give an illusion of time flowing in the reverse direction. Maybe all that remains of it are our memories, and that could explain why memories sometimes don’t match the past.

I have seen the reverse time mentioned here. Was it from Through the Looking Glass? There seems to be a conflict in the behavior of very very small things compared to large things, right? Now that we know how atomic particles behave, we wonder why we never see large things ever behave in the same strange way. Maybe we do, but because we don’t believe it is possible, we don’t notice it when it is right in front of our faces. Maybe we are missing all the signs. Or maybe our beliefs can actually limit reality. I have also always wondered why miracles don’t happen anymore like they did in the Bible. What has changed in modern times? That could be related as well.

    2. Hi Brian! I tend to think that some kind of information – whatever makes up our thoughts, especially when we dream – does travel backwards in time. Dunne’s ‘An Experiment With Time’ in the 1920s laid out the evidence for precognitive dreaming, and I’ve experienced some dreams and premonitions that make more sense as slightly scrambled ‘memories of the future’ than of past events. In hard physics, Richard Feynmann and John Wheeler flirted with the idea that antiparticles are ordinary particles moving backwards in time, and that an emission of a photon in the past might correlate exactly with the absorption of a photon in the future. It’s weird but considered legitimate physics; the idea seems to me to have a lot of potential. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheeler%E2%80%93Feynman_absorber_theory. It does of course raise the question of how causality works if time flows both ways (which event comes first, the past or the future?) But many mystics and people who have had near-death experiences hint strongly that time isn’t as strictly linear as we think. ‘Big ball of timey-wimey stuff’ as Doctor Who puts it, actually has a lot of scientific support.

  26. Yay! Insomnia is back. Okay, I imagine I’ll forget a few, but I’ve noticed what I believe is an extreme uptick in “natural anomalies”. Sometime in late September, right around the 23rd, they discovered a glowing turtle. Now, in Galapagos they’ve found extremely large turtles. Of course, in the recent days we’ve had “floating cities” in China and the UK (perhaps not a natural phenomena but worthy of note). Yesterday, I saw an article for a mammoth? Butterfly that was both male and female, extremely rare. As I peruse my phoney news feed this morning, I see they’ve discovered 10,000 year old cave lions almost perfectly preserved. Admittedly, none of these qualify as a Mandela effect, but it speaks to me as a “reality” or world in flux. I also find it interesting that something like glowing turtles and giant turtles are being discovered in 2015. I acknowledge that we discover new species all the time, but again it seems to me that we should’ve already seen some of these anomalies. Is it possible they just appeared, like the floating cities. At this point, anything is possible Imo. Please forgive my longwindedness. I think I’m getting somewhere. There’s now a hidden compartment in the pyramids that may lead to Nerfertiti’s tomb. Of course, she was Queen to Akhenaten, the Egyptian King with a peculiarly elongated skull. He also tried to start an entirely new religion in Egypt, as I recall and if you believe it. I’ve read that the plague started 3000 years sooner, and that the pyramids themselves may be 12,500 years old. I never was attentive in school, but I find all these discoveries and “disclosures” curious. Then, there’s the star system with the possible “alien structure”. I’ve had an intuition that this real is broader and more robust then I used to imagine. Before the ME, I gave spirits, and ufos a cursory glance and moved on. Now, *I’m* wondering if we’re being set up for an information disclosure new to us, but not new at all to the folks in charge. That would certainly send shock waves and chaos through what is at least in the US a fairly conservative, Christian based society. Even atheists would be taken aback, many I think, by the idea of extra dimensions and alien life. I don’t know. I see a vague pattern in the flow of information. Thought I’d share some thoughts with everyone, and this wonderful place is my last social media refuge. Warm regards, Jason

Then last year I saw on TV that giant squid was filmed for the first time, ever. My first thought was “I saw this years ago.” Does anyone else remember that? Two people I trust also claim to have seen Bigfoot. I have no reason to doubt them as I know them to be reasonable and honest people.

But I do remember the stories. which could still be a mandela effect

          1. Martin your comment made me want to know for sure when the first giant squid was confirmed (still haven’t figured it out for sure). One of the first search results was an article dated yesterday 10/26/15, stating that for the first time ever in history, 3 baby giant squid were caught. They were caught by fishermen in two locations off the coast of Japan. You make a good point about the oceans being largely uncharted. Anything could be out there lol. But I was humored by the synchronicity of talking about giant squid, reading your comments on the Lazarus taxons, then seeing a one day old report about the baby giant squid.

(Not that I trust Nat’l Geographic’s data. Their magazines were a highlight of my childhood, especially the ones featuring ancient Egypt, astronomy, and odd animals. However, the agenda of their TV shows seems to involve calming the masses regarding historic anomalies and “mysteries,” with embarrassingly weak debunking efforts.)

Evidently the colossal squid is even larger, and was discovered in 1925 when tentacles were found in a whale stomach, and then a live specimen was caught in 1981. It’s even bigger than the giant squid, it’s a giant ugly red animal that I’m sure I would have remembered had I known about it.

I remember those stories. but i cant find them, the squids the stories i remember were much larger than the ones in the press today.. same here, the giant squid was massive sort of dark grayish white with dark blueish highlights,. and it was BIG, the colossal one was Light white gray.. and these were HUGE about 3 or 4 times larger than the giant ones a good 30-60 foot long if i can remember big enough to sink ships… the video i saw only saw a few tentacles and they were massive.

thats what i remember.. so yes how can they say they caught it on film NOW, when they had caught it years before

I especially don’t believe the map on Wikipedia (who I am reluctant to trust anyway), that marks the spots globally where giant squid specimen were recovered. I counted 74 (some of them are touching and hard to tell how many dots there are). Where are the pictures of all these recovered specimen? And when were they recovered? Seems quite odd that centuries could go by without anyone actually catching one of these things, and all of a sudden since the “discovery” (2004-present?) there are ones caught all over the world.

This is something I have been aware of for over 40 years. I actually have had a file on my desktop for the past 15 years titled “I may be crazy, but”. During my early encounters with this phenomena I would decide that I had miss- remembered the event or was just mistaken. In some instances such as the changing scene in the Star Wars movie I assumed that different theaters received slightly different cuts of the movie. Although I was aware of these shifts (starting with Wally Cox) It was not until the Forrest J. Ackerman instance ( which was shared over several years by my wife, one of my friends and myself ) that I started trying to track these events. What I consider Public event are items that are consistently “misremembered” by several different people.
    Some of the Public events
1972 Astronaut Edwin Aldrin (still alive in this timeline) died of a heart attack announced by my 7th grade science teacher, confirmed on the national news that night.
1972 Apollo 16 last US flight to the moon (17 in this timeline) with Harrison Schmidt (Apollo 17 crew) on board.
1972- 1975 Actor Wally Cox (this time line died 1973) I remember his death of a heart attack being announced on the Hollywood Squares (where he was one of the squares) in the winter of 1972 and then him showing up again a few months later (I assumed reruns at the time). In 1975 I remember reading in the local paper an announcement of his death. Here he died in 1973
1974 Author Richard Bach (Jonathan Livingston Seagull) read his obituary in 1974 where it described his death in an air craft accident at a county fair, the described accident is similar to what happens to one his characters in his book Illusions. Discovered he was still alive in 1981.
1977 Star Wars (I saw this movie many times in many locations during the summer of 1977) while watching it in a Houston TX theater (the 5th or 6th time I saw it) there was a different camera angle (shot from the rear right corner of the sand crawler instead of perpendicular to the actors) in the Jawa selling droids’ scene .
1988 Forrest J. Ackerman, Author, publisher, super fan. This is one that both my wife and remember very well as it was something that had a continuity over several months. Death announced on Entertainment Tonight in September 1988, Article in Smithsonian Magazine in December of 1988 Issue about his death a description of his collection and the auctioning of his collection by Sotheby’s Auction House. My wife and I discussed my going to the auction in New York because of my interest in purchasing some items from his collection but I was not able to attend it. In 1992 we watched him being interviewed on TV and we were both sure it was an old file tape until the date of the interview was displayed. Died 2008 in this timeline
1994 Singer David Crosby dies of complication after liver surgery. At this time Crosby was appearing on “The John Larroquette Show” as the main characters AA sponsor the episode after Crosby’s death they did a memorial for him as the opening scene with John Larroquette talking about the dangers of addiction and the importance of being an organ donor. A few weeks later Melissa Etheridge announced that Crosby was the father through artificial insemination of her 1 (one) daughter. My wife and I did not discover that he was alive in this timeline until we saw a Crosby, Stills, and Nash concert on TV in 2013. We both assume that it had been recorded before he died in the 90’s. We believed this until the band started making references to the Afghanistan war as well as other current events. In this Time line Etherridge has 2 (not one) children by him. One of the jokes between my wife and I when we noticed a slip was about a Beatles reunion being performed in the grand ball room of the Titanic from the Liverpool docks, I no longer make that joke.

My time line (today at least)
50 States, 911 on 9/11, Challenger shuttle explosion (Sally Ride was not on it) 1986, Charles Schultz, The Candidate (although released in 1970), The Great pumpkin was Snoopy, Dick Clark never dies ever, Borgnine died in 84 , “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood”, Fruit Loops, TAPS, Jack Palance died 1993, Jim Henson died of cancer, Mars has 2 moons, Muhammad Ali died in 2009-2010.

If someone key to the film died, the time can be greatly extended — or dramatically shortened… no pun intended — either as “good taste” or “quick, let’s get release this while he’s in the headlines.”

  30. I made a survey with 20 questions that i shared with Facebook groups on the ME topic. It is still running. It has over 100 respondents now. The answers are very much in favor of “alternative” memories. But i guess that also has to do with the target for the polls. If i shared the poll with “neutral” people the results might be different. Only 17% has most of the answers correct in relation to our “current reality”. No one has made a perfect score of 20 yet.

I would like to do yet another survey on this but then i will improve it a bit.

    1. I will include the “Interview with * Vampire” question
    2. I will add “Not sure” to the choices above “I don’t know” to emphasize that people has to be certain before picking a choice.
    3. I might add questions about health issues. There is actually a way i can correlate this with peoples other answers.
    4. I consider posting it in a “neutral” venue.
    5. I want to have a opening page that tells people to answer from their own memory instead of what they have heard is right. Also they should of course also not check for the right answers online before picking a choice.
    6. I consider not including questions which is solely or mostly about english grammar (Like dilemma/dilemna).
    7. I consider dividing surveys into topics (Pop culture, Dead or alive, Geography, Brands and logos, etc.)
